Sullivan Rallies Back From Six-Run Deficit

Saturday’s doubleheader finale between Sullivan and St. Peters saw three enormous momentum swings with a final that looked more football than baseball.

There was the second inning, when Sullivan built on a modest 2-0 lead by scoring eight runs.

In the third, St. Peters got all those runs back and then some, scoring 13 times.

They padded the lead with three more runs in the fifth to claim a 16-10 lead.

But Sullivan was on the comeback trail.

Scoring once in the sixth and seven times in the seventh, Sullivan wiped out a six-run deficit to win 18-16.

The two teams combined for 20 hits and 26 walks. Nearly 250 pitches were thrown by nine pitches.

Sullivan had 12 hits, three each off the bats of Alex Branson, Cy Cape and Blayten Nolie.

Branson had three RBIs, three runs scored and two doubles.

Cape had two RBIs and three runs. He also doubled.

Nolie scored and doubled twice, walked and drove in a run.

Sam Turilli singled, drove in three runs and scored once.

Cooper Beckett walked three times, scored twice, singled and had an RBI.

Justin Lowe walked twice, drove in two runs and singled.

Braden Carey drew two walks and scored three times.

Tyler Hopen drew two walks, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Jordan Rice walked and had an RBI.

Lane Blankenship walked and scored twice.

Sullivan scored twice in the first on an RBI single by Beckett and a bases loaded walk by Lowe.

In the second, Blankenship scored on a wild pitch. One pitch later, Cape picked up a run-scoring single to give Sullivan a 4-0 lead.

Turilli drove home a pair with a single to left. Lowe added an RBI single and Hopen drew a bases loaded walk. Rice grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Beckett to give Sullivan a 9-0 lead. Hopen later scored on a wild pitch.

St. Peters would send 18 batters to the plate in a marathon of a third inning where they scored 13 runs. Ten came with two outs as they took a 13-10 lead.

They continued the two-out pile-on with three more runs in the fifth.

Sullivan answered back with a tally in the sixth on Turilli’s RBI groundout, making it 16-11.

Down to their final three outs, Sullivan made good in the seventh. They loaded the bases when Carey was hit by a pitch. Branson cleared them with a double to left.

Cape ripped a first-pitch double to drive home Branson. Nolie tied the game with a double.

With two outs, Beckett and Lowe walked. The inning nearly ended on a ground ball, but Hopen beat out a throw from third, allowing Nolie to score as the go-ahead run. Beckett also crossed the plate.

Nolie retired St. Peters in the seventh to finish off the victory.
