Pitman To Join First ECC Women’s Soccer Team

Sierra Pitman, a 2020 Sullivan High School graduate, will be part of the first-ever East Central College women’s soccer team.

Pitman played three seasons for the Lady Eagles and head coach Bill Kackley, who encouraged her to consider trying out for the inaugural squad.

She originally planned to enroll at Missouri State University in Springfield, but once the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out her senior season, she reconsidered.

ECC held tryouts earlier this year and Pitman changed course.

“I changed my mind and decided that I should go play somewhere and not give up,” she said. Pitman played three years of varsity and led the Lady Eagles with nine goals her junior season.

A midfielder, Pitman said she will probably continue that position at ECC, but she’s open to moving around.

Pitman also has interest in any opportunities that might come after ECC. And while Missouri State was an appealing option, she said playing at ECC gives her a chance to use her A+ scholarship money and play soccer.

Pitman would like to eventually become a physical therapist.

Over the course of three seasons, Pitman said her favorite on-field memory was scoring three goals in her junior season. She also enjoyed playing for Kackley and assistant coach Matt Wiegers.

“I didn’t expect that last season would be it (with them),” she said.

The 2020 season being canceled was upsetting, but Pitman kept a positive attitude.

“What made it a little better is knowing I’ll be playing next year,” she said.
