Errors Add Up In Sullivan’s Loss To Union

Sullivan outhit Union in the second game of a doubleheader June 21, but three errors led to three runs that sent the former Post 18 to a 5-2 loss.

Union had just two hits against Sullivan pitchers Cy Cape and Cooper Beckett.

Sullivan had six hits, with four coming in the final inning. They tried to mount a comeback after falling behind 5-0.

A sacrifice fly by Alex Branson and an RBI single by Blayten Nolie chipped away at the deficit, but Sullivan stranded the bases loaded.

Union scored once in the first, twice in the second, once in the third and again in the fourth.

They got on the board in the first. With two outs, Kaden Hughes scored on a wild pitch to grab a 1-0 lead.

Sullivan had a chance to even it up in the second. Bryan Payne stood at third after Lane Blankenship hit a grounder to shortstop that was misplayed by Mason Bailey. Blankenship reached base, but he was thrown out trying to steal second.

Union tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning after Bailey scored on a fielder’s choice. Kaden Motley scored on an error to give Union a 3-0 lead.

Sullivan again brought the tying run to the plate against pitcher Andy Morrow. Braden Carey and Josh Wiese walked on nine pitches, but Morrow got out of the jam with a goundout.

Peyton Burke scored on an RBI single by Derek Hulsey to make it 4-0. Blake Borgmann tagged a sacrifice fly in the fourth to extend the lead to 5-0.

Down to their final three outs, Sullivan ripped off three straight one-out singles in the fifth.

Cooper Beckett, Carey and Wiese got on to load the bases. Branson hit a sacrifice fly, then Nolie drilled an RBI single to make it 5-2.

Cape drew a walk, which loaded the bases again, but Bailey would get a flyout to end the game.
