Eagles Pound 4 Home Runs To Reach Title Game

Sullivan eased into the district championship game by pounding four home runs on Thursday in a 10-0 victory against Cuba.

The Lady Eagles (17-9) played Salem on Friday for the Class 3 District 3 championship.

Hanna Johanning struck two homers.

Jaedin Blankenship and Sophia Weirich also went deep.

The game started and ended with Weirich.

She launched a two-out, two-run homer off Diamond Payne in the first inning.

Up 9-0 with two outs in the fifth, Weirich ripped an opposite field double to right to score Madyson Stahl for the game-winner.

Weirich finished with a three-hit game.

Johanning reached base four times. Aside from her two home runs, she also singled and received an intentional walk.

Blankenship also provided three hits.

Madyson Stahl and Riley Branson each singled.

Johanning pitched five innings and allowed just one hit. She struck out seven and walked two.

Johanning doubled Sullivan’s lead in the third when she sailed a pitch from Payne over the fence in left center to give the Lady Eagles a 4-0 lead.

Weirich followed with a double. She was replaced on the bases by Grace Halmick, who scored on Blankenship’s RBI single to put Sullivan up 5-0.

Johanning did it again in the fourth. With one out, she pulled a pitch that stayed just fair of the foul pole. That gave Sullivan a 7-0 lead.

Two batters later, Blankenship crushed a 1-0 pitch over the fence.

Sullivan wrapped up the game with two runs in the fifth. Hannah Campbell scored on a passed ball. Cuba intentionally walked Johanning to bring up Weirich, who sent a hard grounder to right. Stahl trotted home to send the Lady Eagles to another district title game.
