James L. “Jim” Hammack, 81, of Sullivan, MO, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his family. 

Jim was born on December 5, 1938 in St. Louis, MO, the son of Milburn and Sarah (Martin) Hammack. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Ann Whitney on November 10, 1962 in the living room of his parents’ home, with the wedding vows performed by the groom’s father, who was a pastor. Jim and Phyllis made their home in Santa Ana, CA for 27 years, where he was employed as a machinist for Cherry Textron. Jim and his family moved to Fenton for a short time and then to Sullivan in 2003.

Jim loved motorcycles and cars. The Trans Am was his favorite! He LOVED TO WIN! Jim really enjoyed teaching his grandkids to ride motorcycles, and he was even the manager for Danny and Phoenix, who raced motorcycles during the summer. He spent many hours in his garage just tinkering. Jim was known to have a great sense of humor, his biggest fan being “himself”. 

Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis Hammack of Sullivan, MO; four children: Daniel Hammack of Imperial, MO, Jennifer Clement and husband Larry of Florissant, MO, James Hammack of Sullivan, MO, and Mary Beth Browning and husband, Jim of Minot, ND; eight grandchildren: Justin Hammack of St. Charles, MO, Amber Whitnell and husband Jimmy of Sullivan, MO, Phoenix Hammack of Fenton, MO, Abigail Hammack of Imperial, MO, Daniella Hammack of Imperial, MO, James Hammack of Sullivan, MO, Daniel Hammack and wife Nikki of Sullivan, MO, and Ryu Fleger of Sullivan, MO; ten great-grandchildren:  Julien, Jena, Jasmine, Jasper, Jwhisper, Lily, Nathaniel, Mariana, Jayden and Kreyton; one sister, Shirley Turnbough of Potosi, MO; two daughters-in-law, Leeann Loudan of Michigan and Cheli Hall of Imperial, MO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milburn and Sarah Hammack; two brothers, Wilburn “Bill” Hammack and John Hammack; and one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Turnbough and her husband, Alvin.

Funeral services were 1 p.m., Thursday, February 6, 2020 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Interment followed in St. James Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday, February 6, 2020.
