Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band Wraps Up Season With 31 Trophies

The Sullivan High School Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band wrapped up their 2019 season on Saturday, capturing six more trophies while competing in two events. 

It brought their season trophy count to 31 with a grand total of 85 over the last three years under the direction of Chuck Moore.

This past Saturday, the band competed at two events: the first Francis Howell Invitational where they placed First in Class for their division and Outstanding Music followed by Belleville East Marching Invitational where they received first place in Class AA, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Visual and Crowd Favorite.

The group’s other trophies and events this year included: Washington Band Festival where in the parade competition they received First in Class, Outstanding Marching, Outstanding Color Guard: Field Completion, First In Class and Outstanding Music, Visual and Percussion and in Finals Competition Fourth Place; Bi-State Marching Invitational -Potosi, First Place in Class, Outstanding Music, Drum Major and Overall Parade Champion: Field Competition, Preliminary competition First in Class and Outstanding Music, Visual, Percussion, Color Guard; Finals Competition saw Outstanding Music and Second Place Overall by less than .025 from First Place; Overall Trophies from Potosi included also Peoples Choice Award, Outstanding Soloist-Alto Sax-Emmy Schmidt, Grand Champion for top overall score in parade, preliminary and finals; Festival of Champions, Gray Dvision First Place and Grand Overall Champion.

“This honestly is as good as it can get,” smiled Director Chuck Moore on Monday morning. “We really exceeded expectations this year. Each group has a different personality each year as you have a group of freshman coming in and our seniors graduating. I’m proud of each and every group of students.”

Moore stated that band students, during the marching season and in preparation for the season, begin practice at 6:30 a.m. each day and by the time the 84 participants are ready and some 18 eighth grade prop students get things ready they begin at 7 a.m.

The band, on the band day schedules will practice until 9 a.m. but on off-block day schedules they practice till 7:30 a.m. They also practice every Thursday night and during the summer meet for two and a half weeks for band camp and preparing for the marching season ahead.

Moore stated that the band will begin working on the upcoming season in December/January.
