Clerk Says 375 Voted Absentee, 10 Mail-In

There were 375 absentee voters in Crawford County during the Aug. 4 election and 10 of those were mail-in ballots, according to figures provided by Clerk John Martin.

Missouri voters were able to cast a mail-in ballot for the election following Gov. Mike Parson’s no-excuse absentee order issued in June.

Voters can do the same for the Nov. 3 general election.

Martin said the number of absentee is about the same as other elections.

According to the Jefferson City News Tribune, the number of absentee voters jumped from 61,701 in August 2016 to 231,000, but that number reflects requests.

Maura Browning, a spokeswoman for the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office, told the News Tribune they will not know the actual number until the election is certified on Aug. 24.

Browning also said that because Missouri’s system does not account for mail-in ballots, it will not distinguish between mail-in and absentee by the November election.

Missouri voters who want a mail-in ballot must complete a request form available on the Secretary of State’s Office at sos.mo.gov/elections/goVoteMissouri/howtovote. It must be returned to their local election authority in person or by mail.

A mail-in ballot may not be requested by email.

Voters who are not considered at-risk — people who are 65 or older, immunocompromised or have certain chronic or respiratory illnesses — could mail an application for a ballot to their local election authority, which must be signed and and validated by a notary public.

Those who wish to vote by mail are allowed to have close relatives complete a mail-in ballot request on their behalf.

Requests for absentee or mail-in ballots must be received by local election authorities by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

The last day to register to vote is Wednesday, Oct. 7.
