City Residents Will Not See Immediate Impact From Record Electric Prices
The Sullivan City Council met in open session on Tuesday, March 16, where the council voted to go ahead and pay the February bill for electric consumption that came in at a jaw-dropping $3,244,762. The previous month’s January bill was $820,559.24.
The massive electric usage bill was generated by an extremely cold two-week stretch in February, which caused a shortage of electric suppliers and forced a shortage of natural gas to provide power in the Midwest and lower south.
City Administrator J.T. Hardy reported to the council that the invoice for March, which is actually what the city is billed for February, totaled $3,244,762.
Hardy recommended using the electric reserves to pay the balance owed rather than make monthly payments plus interest.
