Authorities Pursue Subject Who Reportedly Wanted To Harm Self

A subject reportedly wishing to harm themself was pursued by authorities throughout Franklin County on Tuesday, ending with a standoff and the subject semi-conscious.

The Crawford County Sheriff's Office said the pursuit began in Bourbon.

Bourbon Police, Cuba Police, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol attempted to stop the vehicle near mile marker 218 in Bourbon, but the subject failed to yield and continued.

Attempts were made to deploy tire deflation devices, or spike strips, to slow or disable the vehicle. However, the subject continued and led deputies along various county roads and state highways between Crawford and Franklin County.

The subject was traveling into oncoming traffic and committing various traffic offenses during this time. Near the intersection of Highway C and Highway 19, tire deflation devices were once again deployed and were successful.

The subject continued south on Highway 19 and came to rest in the 4300 block of Hwy 19 at approximately 7 p.m. as the vehicle became disabled.

A supervisor from the sheriff's office attempted to establish communication with the subject through a patrol vehicle Public Address system and by cell phone.

This attempt continued for approximately 50 minutes, which required the shut down of north and southbound traffic on Highway 19.

The subject failed to answer cell phone contacts and provided a limited response to the PA system. MSHP offered assistance with a negotiator out of Troop I and had them responding to the scene. At approximately 7:57 pm,  Deputies were able to establish that the subject was in distress and had become unresponsive. Deputies approached the vehicle and were able to remove the subject from the vehicle without incident.

The subject was semi-conscious and breathing, with an apparent upper-body injury. EMS that had been on standby responded and the subject was later flown to a hospital for treatment of injuries.
