County Unemployment Rate Ticks Down In May

Crawford County’s unemployment rate ticked down in May, falling from 9.5 percent to 9.3 percent.

There were 432 initial unemployment claims. This was the lowest since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March when 554 claims were filed.

In April, 941 claims were made.

March through May saw more claims than all but one month during the Great Recession that began in 2008.

Of the surrounding counties, only Phelps County also saw a decrease.

The rate went from 6.6 percent to 6.1 percent.

After reporting 1,449 initial claims in April, Phelps County had 550 in May.

Franklin County continued to see high figures of unemployment.

The rate rose from 10.7 percent in April to 10.9 percent in May, even as initial claims fell from 5,083 to 2,015.

Gasconade County also reported a rise in the unemployment rate, going up from 9.5 percent to 9.7 percent.

There were 213 initial claims, which was down 651 the previous month.

Iron County’s unemployment rate started rising in November 2019 but has accelerated. It went up from 8.5 percent in April to 9.8 percent in May. There were 120 initial claims.

Washington County, which also saw unemployment rise beginning in November 2019, nudged up from 10.4 percent in April to 10.5 percent in May.

There were 383 initial claims in May after 970 in April.

The state’s unemployment rate stood at 10.1 percent in May. 

As of July 11, there were 16,781 initial claims made.
