Bourbon High School Sets June 26 For Graduation

Bourbon High School has selected Friday, June 26 as its graduation date.

The district made the announcement Thursday on its Facebook page.

The ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the infield of the BHS track/

Each graduate has six tickets to distribute to guests. Tickets will be given to graduates on Thursday, June 25 during practice.

Only individuals with tickets will be permitted to attend the ceremony. The school will stream the event online for other family and friends.

If there is rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors and seating will be limited to four guests per graduate.

Bourbon administrators opted for an outdoor ceremony due to social distancing.

The district originally planned on June 27, July 18 or August 1.

The story below ran in the May 27 issue.

Bourbon School Board members on Thursday brainstormed over ideas for the 2020 graduation ceremony, which appears to be moving forward despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the past two months, the district has eyed three potential dates for graduation: June 27, July 18 and August 1. All three fall on a Saturday.

However, Friday, June 26 has emerged as the newest possible date, but that is tentative and contingent upon many other factors.

Superintendent Dr. Kyle Gibbs said if the district does go through with graduation, it needs to be sooner rather than later.

“We’ll keep losing momentum the longer we push it back,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs on Friday told the Independent News he would need to be in contact with state and county health officials to determine the best way to proceed.

He also expressed that everything is still in the discussion phase and they hope to have more details this week.

The ceremony could take place on the track’s infield with chairs spaced apart and attendance limited.

Board members discussed a Friday evening or Saturday morning ceremony.

Gibbs said they would need to determine how many guests each student is allowed and tickets would be distributed.

A sound system would be rented for the ceremony for around $1,000.

The board discussed having around 5 to 6 guests per student and JD Huitt’s media class would stream the rest online.

Members also questioned how they would enforce attendees from gathering around the fenced area.
