Winter Freeze Retreats, Bourbon Students Return To Classroom

A deep winter cold that saw 13 straight days of temperatures below freezing finally snapped on Saturday.

The 40 degree temperature felt downright balmy compared to the two weeks of winter misery that gripped the area.

Six to nine inches of snow fell on Feb. 15-16.

A massive thaw over the weekend saw the snow begin to melt away.

Temperatures were expected to reach their normal February highs while Tuesday’s forecast called for a high near 60.

If winter is in the rearview mirror, it was a cold, messy affair for two weeks.

Crawford County R-1 called off classes Feb. 9 and didn’t go back the rest of the week.

Administration planned to return on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

However, after the big snow fall, the district took the step to just call off classes for the rest of the week.

Classes were set to resume on Monday following a two-week break.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the investigation of just two accidents.

The highway patrol said a Springfield woman had minor injuries in an accident Feb. 15.

Brianna Yelton, 29, began sliding near the 186 mile-marker, traveled off the road and struck a concrete barrier.

An accident Feb. 17 led to minor injuries for three people.

Janette King, 30, St. Robert slid on ice and overturned at the 158 mile-marker.

King, Charles McCray, 47, St. Robert and  1-year-old juvenile all had minor injuries.

The weather has impacted several events, including the state’s COVID-19 mass vaccination events.

Gov. Mike Parson announced that all mass events planned for Feb. 15-19 had been canceled due to the weather.
