2020 graduate Evan Shetley was an incredible Sullivan High School wrestler, linebacker and offensive lineman who broke countless records. Under wrestling coach Matt Peregoy, he had a record of 159-26, was a four-time state tournament qualifier, 3x all-state wrestler and received an All-Area Wrestler of the Year award.

But his biggest accomplishment as an Eagle was becoming the first state champion for Sullivan. He said, “That was a long-term goal of mine. With me and my coaches, we put in a lot of hard work and it finally paid off.”

His work ethic included cutting weight, making practice every day, staying on a strict diet and being healthy enough to compete. By overcoming adversity and staying motivated, Shetley reached his goal and still refused to stop even after he crossed the finish line.

Shetley is now wrestling at Oklahoma State University in the Big 12 conference against some of the greatest collegiate fighters in America. Even though it was daunting, he overcame self-doubt and used his experience to excel in a tougher environment. “Practices, Coaches Peregoy and Lorenz helped me be prepared for what was going to come into OSU.”

As a Freshman, he began his career with a 10-2 decision over William Edgar of Little Rock and finished the season with 2-1 in extra matches.

In his Redshirt year, Shetley put together a 6-2 record in two tournaments, as well as placing third and going 4-1 at the Norseman Open.

Last season, he continued his roll while going 8-1 when competing in two open tournaments, a first-place finish at the Golden Norseman Open, and a fourth-place finish at the Roger Denken Open. Overall, Shetley obtains a 65.22% win percentage over his college career.

Despite being a little intimidated, Shetley is glad he decided to play at the collegiate level. “If I didn’t come here when I got the opportunity, I would have wondered what it would be like for the rest of my life.”

He has accomplished so much in wrestling but is most proud of his education. “You’re only an athlete for a few short years of your life and education is what determines the rest of it.” Shetley is eager to get stronger and become the best person he can be for himself.

“It’s all about getting a little bit better every day. Don’t compare yourself to other people’s success, that’s going to get you nowhere. The biggest opponent you’re going to have is in the mirror. You gotta focus on yourself and just find small victories every day.” Growth has always been a big aspect of Shetley’s life. Whether that be in wrestling or education, getting better each and every day is what made him so successful.
