Track And Field Clinches State Spots
Three Sullivan High School athletes have clinched their ride to Jefferson City. They punched their ticket to state after dominating the Class 4 Sectional 3 Tournament on Saturday, May 24.
Jayson Summers leaped to a second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles at Waynesville. The senior crossed the finish line at 40.60 seconds for his first-ever state berth. Summers thanked Coaches Zachary Carey and Terry Wood for laying the foundation for his success.
Karlee Head will make her second trip to Adkins Stadium in Missouri’s capital city. The sophomore received bronze in the long jump, reaching 5.46 meters.
Robert York II will join Summers and Head along for the ride to Jefferson City. He earned his spot by landing third in the javelin, throwing the spear for 53.34 meters. York II won the event seven times throughout his senior season and will cap off his high school career on the biggest stage.
The Class 4 State Championship is set to take place from May 30 to 31.
On Friday, Head will start the long jump at 10 a.m., and Summers will compete in the preliminary round of the 300-meter hurdles at 3 p.m.
Then, York II will begin throwing the javelin on Saturday at 2 p.m., and the 300-meter hurdle finals will kick off at 3:10 p.m.
Sullivan’s boys’ 4x800-meter relay team placed sixth at sectionals (8:41.92). Its runners were William Hunter, Luke Herron, Summers and Zechariah Beagle.
The 4x400-meter relay team took eighth on the track. Hunter, Summers, Beagle and York II finished their race at 3:37.98.
Head also competed in the 400-meter dash, landing in eighth place and clocking at 1:01.67.
Sullivan’s varsity boys finished 16th with 18 points, while their girls ranked 17th and scored seven.
