Sullivan Pulls Away In Late Innings
The softball game was tied at two until the fifth and sixth innings when the Lady Eagles won at Union on Thursday. The victory came before Sullivan traveled to Binder Park for a weekend tournament. The road win was after the shutout against Owensville. The Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Wildcats, 8-2.
At the top of the second, Sullivan first came alive. After an out, Dorie Richardson made it to first on a walk. Jaedin Blankenship hit a line drive double to right and Richardson advanced to third. The bases were loaded after Hayli Venable drew a walk. When Grace Halmick hit a fly ball to left, Richardson scored. The second run scored after Kayla Ulrich hit a successful sacrifice fly to left. Union tied the score at two at their next at bat.
At the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Eagles broke the tie. Ulrich at the top of the lineup landed on first from a walk. After an out, Alexis Funkhouser hit a line drive single to left and Ulrich advanced. Ulrich and Funkhouser scored when Molly Lohden hit a ground ball and reached on an error.
The Lady Eagles secured the win at the top of the sixth when four more runs came across the plate. After an out, Venable took first with a walk. Halmick hit a successful sacrifice bunt that advanced Venable. Ulrich delivered again when she blasted a two out double to center that scored Venable. Morgan Braun drew a walk at the perfect time to set up Funkhouser to pop a long home run to center field. Funkhouser put away the Lady Wildcats with that big blast, 8-2.
Evvie Blankenship picked up the win on the mound with only giving up two runs on five hits. She tallied a stupendous nine strikeouts.
