Sullivan High School Hosts Cross Country Tournament
Sullivan invited three other high schools to their home cross country invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The runners looped for 5000 meters around the Campbell-Chapman Sports Complex, Sullivan Fairgrounds and City Lake Park.
Sullivan’s varsity team had three medalists who cracked the top 20.
Zechariah Beagle was the sixth runner to cross the finish line. He clocked 19:19.52 for the boys.
Leeah Deleski landed the highest place for the Lady Eagles. She was the eleventh girl to complete the race, finishing in 25:36.03.
Gracie Edmonston was Sullivan’s third runner to medal, taking 20th at 29:29.42.
Before the Sullivan runners took off, head coach Terry Wood gave them tips on overcoming the challenges they would face. He stated, “I cautioned them about the difficulty of the course and to be patient with their attack. When I designed the course, I made sure it was technically challenging for every runner. So, [the] home team advantage can be a benefit. Unfortunately, most of us were new to 5km races.”
The team will use the results as a benchmark to determine which areas need improvement. Wood explained, “There’s some learning ahead of us. We saw some promising results but have to address some 5K specifics. Setting up for the later part of the race and challenging the downhills are on our agenda.”
The varsity boys rounded out the top four with 95 points. Lutheran South (26) ranked first, St. Clair (41) placed second and Washington (81) took third.
The high school girls finished fourth with a score of 92. Lutheran South (27) was the champion, Washington (40) was the runner-up and St. Clair (83) finished third.
