Sullivan Eclipses The Comets In 5-1 Victory
The Lady Eagles (7-2-2) snapped Fatima’s (4-1) undefeated record with a 5-1 home win on Thursday, Apr. 4.
Sullivan held a four-game winning streak after beating the Comets, and head coach Matt Wiegers could not have been any prouder of his squad. “We are starting to become a more complete team,” he explained. “It’s noticeable when our defense can keep a St. Clair team scoreless, and the offense was able to increase our scoring output each contest this week.”
He also praised his rookies for stepping up on the field, saying, “I really liked seeing the production from freshmen Ava Hayes and Ella Kirk. They both really shined and showed they feel comfortable playing beside each other in the midfield.”
Within the first eight minutes of the Fatima game, Cambria Pohlman snuck up through the right side of the field for Sullivan’s first goal.
Molly Lohden continued to load up strikes to the net, and ten minutes after their first score, she was finally able to get the ball into the net for the Lady Eagles’ second.
Then Tessa Newman, who also played aggressively by launching shots left and right, was able to notch a goal for a 3-0 lead.
The Comets capitalized on a foul right after to make their only score of the evening. A few minutes later, they blazed across the field to try to shoot it into the net again. But Sullivan’s starting goalkeeper, Maria Schatzl, was able to crash their opportunity with a clutch save.
As Fatima attempted to rally back, Sullivan freshmen Eden Lambert, Kirk and Hayes kept the Lady Eagles fired up until the end of the first half. The young gun, Hayes, sniped in Sullivan’s final goal before the buzzer sounded.
With a 4-1 lead at halftime, Wiegers told his squad that they had played their best performance all season. He said to continue the momentum and stay on their toes to remain warm against the cold.
The Comets came in hot to start the second half, but Schatzl was able to kick her wrestling skills into gear and continue to make clutch saves. Dorie Richardson and Alyssa Johnson also kept locking down Fatima in the backfield.
Kirk was then able to notch her first goal of the season and Sullivan’s final goal with 32 minutes remaining.
