Sullivan Eagles Fall In Sectionals To MICDS

The Sullivan Eagles basketball team had an exciting season this year. The boys won two back to back district championships. The Eagles slayed the Salem Tigers, 61-44. Then Sullivan brought that motivation to Farmington on the following Monday to play MICDS at Sectionals. The Rams were on an eight game winning streak before playing Sullivan. The Rams fell to Park Hills Central to get their streak snapped. The Eagles fell to Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School (MICDS), 49-37.

In the first quarter, the Rams took the early lead. MICDS’ Jayden Banks drew first blood with a three point basket from the top of the key. Aiden Kirk was the first Eagle to send in a layup and MICDS answered back with a layup of their own. Banks shot one in from the free throw line and Brin Lewis jammed in a basket. Sam Summers scored his first points of the game with a bank shot and drew a foul but missed the free throw. Gavin Dace scored a layup when he ran the hoop aggressively, and Lewis landed another shot off the glass. Summers landed two free throws to end the first quarter with Sullivan down by three, 11-8.

In the second quarter, MICDS extended their lead. MICDS’ Brandon Clemens added a layup to start the second, and Summers followed with a layup. He placed in another layup with one hand and MICDS answered back with five minutes left. Clemens sailed in two free throws and Summers drained a shot off the glass. Clemens sank in a three point basket and Summers sank in a free throw. MICDS’ Jason Stokes ended the first half with a three pointer and the Rams still led, 23-15.

In the third quarter, the Eagles kept the battle close. Gavin Dace scored quickly and Kirk kept the momentum with a three point basket. MICDS’ Karim Fall answered back with a three point basket and Summers sank in a layup to follow. The Rams took a timeout with a little over five minutes left. Lewis landed a three pointer and Summers grabbed another layup. MICDS took another timeout and Kirk sailed in two more free throws. Summers shot in a two point basket and MICDS’ Marcus Coleman did the same. Clemens finished the quarter from the free throw line, but Sullivan bridged the gap, 33-28.

In the final quarter, Sullivan’s stellar season came to an end. Clemens jammed in a layup and Summers answered back on a fast break drive. Sullivan’s Head Coach Dino McKinney took a time out and MICDS added three free throws when the action resumed. Summers tallied another layup and Banks answered back. Summers sailed in two free throws and Kirk was the last Eagles to sink a last three pointer. Banks scored the last two points of the game from the free throw line and MICDS moved on, 49-37.

Summers scored the most points with 23. Kirk followed with ten and Gavin Dace had four. The official stats for the defense were unavailable at press time.
