Sullivan Eagles Basketball Split Two Games

The varsity basketball team played two games this week. These were the first two games after their consolation win in the FCNB Bank-It tournament.They started the week on the road at Washington on Tuesday and finished the week on Friday at home. Washington barely squeezed by the Eagles, 48-42. Sullivan redeemed themselves on Friday over Eldon, 55-51.

Washington

Sullivan traveled to Washington on Tuesday to play their Four Rivers adversaries. The Blue Jays came away with the victory. The two teams battled, but Washington defeated the Eagles by six, 48-42.

The Eagles forced ten turnovers. Sam Summers and Gavin Dace each led the team in turnovers with four. Gabe Dace tallied two turnovers. Sullivan held Washington at 38% shooting. The Eagles collected seven steals with Chris Glaser earning three. Gabe Dace had two and Gavin Dace and Aiden Kirk each had one. Sullivan tallied 17 rebounds and Gavin Dace had the most with six. Gabe Dace collected four. Summers secured three and Kirk had two. Glaser and Drake Gawer each got one.

Gavin Dace led the team in points with 21. He was followed by his brother Gabe Dace with eight. Summers secured seven. Kirk and Glaser each finished with three points.

Eldon

The home crowd was pumped up on Friday. Eldon took the early lead and the Eagles couldn’t tie the game until the second quarter. The Mustangs tied the score again in the third. The two teams traded blows back and forth, but Sullivan claimed the victory. The Eagles defeated Eldon, 55-51.

In the first quarter, the Mustangs took the early lead and scored fifteen points. Eldon’s Devin Wardenburg scored the first points of the game and Gabe Dace stole the ball. Eldon scored three more points unanswered before Summers got the first layup for Sullivan. Gabe Dace then sailed a three pointer through the hoop and Eldon was up by six before Gavin Dace netted another layup. Eldon was up at the end of the quarter, 18-7.

In the second quarter, Sullivan posted a comeback and claimed the lead. Summers netted a free throw and Gavin Dace caught the rebound and passed the ball to his brother for the three point basket. The Eagles were on the comeback run when Kirk sailed a three point basket off the glass. The Mustangs took a timeout and Summers tied the game up right after. His strength powered through two defenders with a beautiful layup off the glass. Gabe Dace broke the tie with a three point basket from beyond the arc. Eldon’s Austin Rush netted two points before Gabe Dace stole the ball back and passed it to Kirk who netted another two points. Eldon scored another layup and Kirk sailed in another three point basket. Glaser netted another three point basket and Summers landed another layup with under a minute left. Summers got another layup and Sullivan was up, 33-24.

In the third quarter, Eldon’s Hunter Hees tied the game and Gavin Dace broke that tie right away. Eldon’s Nate Reynolds tied the game with two free throws and Summers broke the tie with a solid layup. The powerful Summers sailed in another layup and Sullivan was up by four. 39-35.

In the fourth quarter, Sullivan secured the win. Eldon’s Devin Hardy made his team only down by two, but Kirk gave Sullivan a bigger lead with a three point basket. Wardenburg made eldon down by four and they took a timeout. Sullivan’s Head Coach took a timeout with 1:49 left in the game. Gavin Dace extended Sullivan’s lead from the free throw line and Wardenburg landed another layup. After another Eldon timeout, Sullivan scored again. Eldon’s Rush made a free throw and Kirk made both of his to keep Sullivan in the lead. Eldon’s Reynolds made Eldon only down by three and they took a timeout. Summers made a free throw and Glaser tallied four more free throws, before Eldon’s Rush made one. Summers sailed in one last free throw and Eldon’s Cannon Ahart finished the game with a three point basket.

Sullivan forced eight turnovers. Gabe Dace led with four. Gavin Dace, Glaser, Kirk, and Summers each had one. The Eagles also had eight steals. Gabe Dace had six and Kirk had two.

Summers led in points with 20 and was followed by Kirk with 13. Gabe Dace had nine and was followed by Glaser with seven. Gavin Dace finished with six points.
