Sullivan Baseball Splits Two Away Games

The Eagles baseball team tallied another win on Monday against St. James. Sullivan surged past the Tigers, 8-1. The boys rallied against Borgia, but the Knights outscored Sullivan by seven. Borgia defeated the Eagles, 12-5.

St. James

Sullivan started the hit parade early in the first inning and continued with three more runs in the sixth inning. One of the winning factors of the game was that the Eagles didn’t commit a single error. Lane Blankenship was the savior on the mound and lasted five innings. He recorded seven strikeouts and only gave up two hits and one run. The Eagles collapsed the Tigers, 8-1.

In the first inning, the Eagles were the first team on the board. Seth Valley was the first Eagle to land on first after an error. Gavin Schmidt singled on a pop fly to second. Valley scored when Chase Blue hit a successful sacrifice fly. Lucas Parsons followed with a walk. Schmidt scored when the catcher committed an error and Parsons advanced to second on the same error. Parsons advanced to third on a passed ball and was scored when Skaggs singled on a line drive to left.

In the third inning, Sullivan added another unanswered run. Valley connected on a single and Schmidt did the same on a ground ball to the shortstop. Parsons walked after an out, before Drake Gawer smacked a line drive single to center. Valley scored and the bases were loaded.

In the sixth inning, Gawer singled on a ground ball to left and Skaggs followed with another line drive single. Cambrian Koch hit a line drive single to right to load the bases. Two runs were scored when Nolan Ulrich hit a ground ball to right field. The Eagles were up by seven when Koch was scored by a successful sacrifice ground out. Sullivan tallied another run at the top of the seventh to secure the win.

Ulrich, Skaggs, Scmidt, and Gawer each had multiple hits on the day.

Borgia

The Knights took the lead early and secured the win in the sixth inning. Borgia tallied five runs in their last at bat. Koch was pitcher for Sullivan and lasted five innings on the mound. He gave up seven hits and seven runs. Koch recorded four strikeouts.

In the third inning, Sullivan jumped on the board after Borgia already scored four. Ulrich reached first on an error made by the second baseman. Mitchell Garner grounded into a fielder’s choice and Ulrich was out advancing to second. After a strikeout, Blue launched a homerun to left and they were down by two.

In the fifth inning, the Eagles landed two more runs. Each team tallied a run in the fourth and the Knights added another two runs in the fifth after Sullivan. Blue and Schmidt both walked and Parsons scored Blue on a ground ball single. Schmidt scored when Skaggs hit a ground ball and landed on an error. Borgia secured the win with five runs at the bottom of the sixth.

Schmidt was the big hitter at the plate and went 2-3. Blue was the only Eagle who smacked the long ball.
