Sullivan’s Heartbreak From Hermann on Tuesday

Sullivan’s boys and girls basketball teams played Hermman on Monday at home. Hermann won both games at Sullivan. Abby Peterson and Sam Summers were the points leaders, but Hermann held strong. The Lady Eagles were defeated by the Lady Bearcats by twenty, 71-51. The Sullivan boys fell to Hermann, 48-32.

Girls

Peterson and Kylee McReynolds led the team in points and smashed three pointers, but the Lady Eagles came up short. The Lady Eagles fell to 7-10 on the season after the defeat and Hermann extended their record to 12-8. The Lady Bearcats surged past Sullivan, 71-51.

In the first quarter, Hermann’s Ava Hughes scored the first point of the game by a free throw and McReynolds answered back with a three point swish. Hermann took the lead back with a three pointer of their own from Kennedie Witthaus. McReynolds stole the lead back with another big three point basket. Hermann tied the score and took the lead with back to back layups from Hughes. Peterson grabbed the lead back with a huge three pointer. She notched another one wide open from the top of the key. Dakayla McClain drained a layup and Hermann had to take a timeout. Peterson ended the quarter with her third three pointer of the game and Sullivan led, 17-13.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bearcats took the big lead to end the first half. Hermann’s Quin Winkelman took the lead with back to back three point baskets. She botched another one and Hermann took another time out. Sullivan’s defense gave them a spark when Hayli Venable dove to give the Lady Eagles the ball. McClain launched a layup and Witthaus answered back with a three. Olivia Witt leaped in with an outside three point basket. Sullivan’s Head Coach Jordan Flora took a timeout at 2:40 and Witthaus slammed another three pointer. McClain notched another layup under the hoop and Hermann’s Holly Heldt grabbed two more layups. The Lady Bearcats grabbed the lead, 39-24.

In the third quarter, Hermann kept control on the scoreboard, but Sullivan kept up the fight. Peterson shot a ball in from the inside and Hermann’s Kimber Hale did the same. Peterson nailed another inside shot and drilled a layup back to back. Molly Lohden landed a much needed three point basket from the left side and Peterson crashed a layup off the glass. Lohden collected the big return on the rebound and McReynolds notched her third three pointer of the night. Hermann took a timeout when they were up by six. Hughes returned fire with a three pointer and a layup. They had a big scoring run and Peterson scored two free throws. Witthaus extended Hermann’s lead with another three and Sullivan was down by eighteen, 58-40.

In the fourth quarter, Sullivan fought back but Hermann secured the win. DaPhane Polanowski landed a layup to begin the final and Coach Flora took another timeout at 7:22 after Witthaus landed another three. Delaney George jammed a three point basket from the left corner and with a little over four minutes left, Hughes grabbed two more free throws. Alex Bylo got the last three points for Sullivan with a layup and a free throw. Hermann defeated Sullivan, 71-51.

Peterson scored the most points with 19. She was followed by McReynolds with nine and McClain with six. Polanowski had five. Witt, George, Bylo and Lohden each had three.

The Lady Eagles forced eight turnovers and had five steals. Sullivan’s defense grabbed 28 rebounds with Peterson leading with eight. McClain followed with six and Lohden had four. Venable and Witt got three. Raegan Johnson, Bylo, McReynolds and Polanowski finished with one.

Boys

The Eagles played their first game of conference play against the Bearcats. Sullivan fell to 0-1 after the defeat by Hermann. Summers had a great game, but the Bearcats overpowered Sullivan by sixteen points. The Eagles fell to Hermann on Tuesday, 48-32.

In the first quarter, Hermann got the lead early. Hermann’s Reese Rehmert got the first points of the game with a three pointer. Hermann’s Parker Anderson gave them the five point lead. Summers scored the first free throw for Sullivan and Gavin Dace scored two layups to bridge the gap. Hermann took a timeout with 3:19 on the clock and Hermann’s Nolan Brune sailed in a three point basket. Anderson landed a layup and Summers scored a layup to end the quarter. The Bearcats grabbed the early lead, 13-7.

In the second quarter, the Eagles added eight more points, but Hermann notched thirteen more. Anderson secured a layup and Gabe Dace answered back with a three point basket from the top of the key. Chris Glaser drained a three pointer to follow and Hermann added a free throw. Sullivan was only down by seven when Sullivan’s Head Coach Dino McKinney took a timeout at 2:46. Gavin Dace placed in another layup and Brune notched another three pointer with under a minute left. After Hermann’s Conner Coffey added a layup, the quarter was over with the Bearcats in the lead, 26-15.

In the third quarter, the Bearcats held the lead. Coach McKinney took another timeout at 3:31 with Sullivan down by nine. Summers added two more layups and Anderson kept up his big game. Hermann was up still, 38-29.

In the final quarter, Hermann secured the win. Anderson grabbed another free throw and Hermann’s Braeden Englert followed with a free throw. Aiden Kirk got the last points for Sullivan with a big three pointer splashed off the glass. Reese’s brother, Rane, scored the last free throw for Hermann and Hermann won, 48-32.

Summers led in points with 13. Gabe Dace followed with six and Gavin had four. Kirk, Glaser and Drake Gawer finished with three points each.

Sullivan’s defense forced five turnovers and four steals. The Eagles grabbed 23 rebounds. Summers led with eight and Gavin Dace secured five. Gabe Dace got four. Glaser and Kirk each finished with three.
