Mariah Denney Shatters Two Records In A Week
In just four days, freshman Mariah Denney set new records for the fastest 1600 and 800-meter runtimes in Sullivan High School history.
"I am excited to achieve something that no other female athlete in Sullivan has achieved, and I am super grateful for the opportunities I've had," Denney said after inking her name into the books. "This season, I hope to make it to state, and receive a medal and hopefully get some new personal records."
She made her track and field debut at a home Early Season Tri-meet on Tuesday, Mar. 19. That evening, Denney shattered a 45-year-old record at 5:20 in the 1600-meter run, surpassing Sally Scott’s previous record of 5:23.
The following Saturday, at the McCullough-Douglas Invitational in Festus, Denney notched another record with a time of 2:20.99 in the 800-meter run, breaking Debbie Johnson’s record of 2:21.20 set in 1980.
