Lady Varsity Eagles Vanquished By Borgia

Sullivan’s girls basketball team fell 45-32 to St. Francis Borgia on Saturday  in the first game of the Class 4 District 3 tournament.

Borgia entered into play with an even record of 11-11. Sullivan had a record of 9-14. Borgia was seeded third and Sullivan sixth.

Sullivan was the first team to draw blood when Dakayla McClain scored on a free throw. She tallied another two points on an inside shot off the glass and Head Coach Stacia Houlihan of Borgia called time out at 5:48.

Abby Peterson netted the first 3-point basket of the game and Lexie Meyer of Borgia answered back with a layup.

She drew the foul and scored a free throw after. Sullivan's Head Coach Jordan Flora took a time out to give his team some much needed motivation with a little over three minutes left in the first. The Lady Knights’ Kaitlyn Patke scored a free thow and came alive after. Borgia snapped when they stole the ball from Sullivan and scored on a fast break to the hoop.

Meyer netted another basket and the first quarter was over.

The Lady Knights led only by two points.

When the action returned, Borgia's Meyer netted a 3-point basket. Raegan Johnson scored two free throw baskets, followed by a layup by Borgia. Peterson notched another free throw. The Lady Knights netted another two points and Peterson answered back with a layup. Borgia blasted two more baskets before Kylee McReynolds made a great inside shot off the glass. Borgia's Meyer scored another layup and Peterson answered back with one for Sullivan. Peterson had the ball and made a strong run towards the basket but the ball was stolen  by Meyer but she came up short on the score. The Lady Knights only led Sullivan by five at the end of the first half.

Borgia's Patke returned with vengeance and landed an inside shot to start the second half. Coach Flora took a timeout with a little less then seven minutes left in the third. Borgia placed another basket and Delaney George secured a free throw for Sullivan.

McReynolds launched a huge free throw but came up short and McClain recovered the rebound and scored on an inside layup.  Borgia's Audrey Richardson netted an inside shot and Peterson answered back with a layup.

Richardson stole the back for Borgia and drove one to the hoop with a little over three minutes left in the third. A timeout was called and McClain crammed in a layup with a little over two minutes left. Borgia scored four unanswered points but Peterson blasted a big layup to bridge the gap. The score was 32-24 to enter into the final quarter.

In the final quarter, McReynolds sank a 3-point basket to give Sullivan some late momentum. The Lady Knights netted a layup and Peterson answered back with a layup for Sullivan.

Borgia's Patke landed a layup and the score was 36-29. McClain bridged the gap with a layup and Borgia landed a free throw. Coach Houlihan took a time out with a little over four and a half minutes left in the game.

Johnson jammed a free throw basket a little over thirty seconds later and Meyer made a layup for Borgia. The score was 41-32 after Borgia's Richardson landed a layup. Patke tallied another basket with a little over two minutes and a half left. Meyer secured the win for the Lady Knights with a free throw.
