Lady Eagles Get Final Bite Over St. Clair In 51-41 Win
Sullivan (7-19) beat fourth-seeded St. Clair (7-16) 51-41 in the Class 4 District 3 quarterfinals on Monday, Feb. 26 at St. Francis Borgia High School.
The Lady Eagles dominated in their first clash against the Lady Bulldogs, winning 45-25. But they fell on St. Clair’s territory for their second game, losing 46-39.
Sullivan senior guards Delaney George, Hayli Venable and Raegan Johnson refused to let the Lady Bulldogs get the final bite, knocking them off the district bracket for the second consecutive time.
“Losing to them earlier in the season gave us a lot of motivation to do our best, especially when it could potentially be our last game of the season,” George said after racking up a career-high 18 points against St. Clair. She went 6-11 on field goals and 4-6 on free throws while also having three steals, two rebounds and an assist.
Venable scored 7 points, grabbed six rebounds and made four steals.
Johnson collected four points, two steals and a rebound.
Freshman guard Karlee Head led Sullivan with five steals and was the second-highest scorer with nine points. She also had three rebounds and two assists.
Junior guard Molly Lohden scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and made two steals.
Junior forward Cora Shetley contributed six points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Sophomore guard Avery Merkel had two rebounds, while junior guard Rayna Claus had one.
The Lady Eagles executed 55% of their free throws, 28% of their field goals and 18% of their three-pointers. Sullivan also tallied 27 rebounds, 20 steals and eight assists.
