Lady Eagles Fall In Second Round Of Holiday Classic

Sullivan basketball faced St. James on Wednesday in the second round of the 11th Annual Peoples Bank Holiday Classic. Sullivan was victorious in the first round but was defeated in the other two games. This was the first game that Sullivan lost in the tournament. St. James squeezed by Sullivan, 43-25.

In the first quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Sullivan by three. St. James scored the first two baskets unanswered before Olivia Witt netted a big three point basket. St. James answered back with a three pointer of their own and Sullivan’s Head Coach Jordan Flora took a timeout with a little over four minutes left. St. James’ Rylee Hancock landed a free throw and Tess Crocker of St. James netted a layup. Kendall Costoplos of St. James sailed two free throws in, and the Lady Tigers came out strong and consistent. Peterson added two free throws and Livi Herron of St. James flung a three pointer in. Sullivan’s Raegen Johnson landed a good layup, drawing a foul and shooting a free throw. Sullivan’s defense held St. James and Molly Lohden landed a layup when she powered through defenders. Dakayla McClain secured a layup at the buzzer, 15-12.

In the second quarter, Sullivan outscored St. James by three and tied the game. Costoplos of St. James landed a layup and drew the foul, but missed the free throws. Peterson then got the rebound and scored a layup on a fast break to the basket. Costoplos of St. James added four more points and Sullivan’s crowd was loud after Olivia Witt drew a perfect foul. She missed the free throws but landed a much needed three point basket with a little over a minute left. Abby Peterson added a layup and the home crowd came alive when she took the lead after a three point basket. Hancock of St. James drew a controversial foul and tied the game after a free throw, 22-22.

In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Sullivan by six. Lydia Kemnitzer of St. James hit a layup and Livi Herron of St. James hit the hoop but the three point basket bounced in. Peterson secured two free throws and McClain claimed a layup. Peterson took the lead with a layup and Head Coach Terry Wells of St. James took a timeout with a little under four minutes left. St. James took the lead back when Hancock landed a layup. After Coach Flora took another timeout, Herron of St. James netted a layup and three point basket, 34-28.

In the fourth quarter, St. James slid by Sullivan and outscored them by two points. Peterson nailed two layups back to back and Coach Flora took a timeout. Coach Wells of St. James took a timeout with less than six minutes left and Herron added another layup. Kenadee Smith of St. James tallied two free throws before the Lady Tigers took another timeout. The Lady Tigers took their last timeout after Peterson scored a last layup for Sullivan. Costoplos of St. James secured four more points and the Lady Tigers won, 43-35.

The Lady Eagles secured a substantial amount of turnovers with 21. They held the Lady Tigers at 31% shooting. Peterson led the team in turnovers with five. Lohden followed with four. Kylee McReynolds and Delaney George secured three. Raegan Johnson and McClain tallied two turnovers. Witt and Alex Bylo finished with one each. Sullivan got twenty rebounds. Peterson led with 11 and was followed by Bylo with three. Witt and McClain each had two. Johnson and DaPhane Polanowski finished with one each.

Peterson led the team in points with 20. Witt followed with six and Johnson had three. Lohden, McClain, and George each finished with two.
