Lady Eagles Fall To Lady Tigers
The Sullivan Lady Eagles faced the St. James Lady Tigers on Saturday afternoon as a make up game from Thursday night.
St. James travelled to Sullivan with a record of 19-5 and coming off a loss to Battle the game before.
The Lady Tigers were every bit as good as their record indicated and they rolled Sullivan 53-14.
Sullivan, looking to redeem their loss to Union in their last game, were blitzed 15-0 in the first quarter and never recovered.
The game started with St. James scoring the first four points. Head Coach Jordan Flora took a timeout with 5:46 remaining, but it didn’t slow St. James down.
Rylee Hancock netted a 3-pointer and Sullivan took another timeout. St. James came out of the break and scored on a layup 30 seconds later.
The Lady Eagles had plenty of shooting opportunities but couldn't connect. St. James continued their run and led 15-0 after one quarter.
Alyson Bullock of St. James blasted an inside shot off the glass at the start of the second quarter. Abby Peterson was the first Lady Eagle to score on a layup.
Coach Flora took another timeout to talk to his team with 6:20 remaining in the half.
Bullock made a couple free throws and Ally Hartley of St. James jammed a huge three point shot. Peterson sank two more free throws and the score was 23-4 at 3:02.
Hancock netted two more points.
Hayli Venable landed a layup for Sullivan, followed by Hancock and Kendall Costoplos of St. James' two layups. St. James drained another two points and Coach Flora took a timeout with 13 seconds left. Emily Recker drained a three point shot near the buzzer and sent St. James into halftime leading 34-6.
In the third quarter, Recker was the first lady to score, followed by St. James with another layup. Delaney George made a huge steal to give Sullivan the needed motivation and she stormed on a fastbreak down the court. She went up for a layup and missed but her team was down to back her up. Sullivan retained the missed ball and Peterson drained a layup to add to their score.
Peterson then sank a three point shot to bridge the gap. St. James answered back with a free throw and the score was 40-11. Dakayla McClain saw her chance at the free throw line but missed and St. James rebound the ball. They ran down on a fast break but missed the shot and Peterson capitalized. She ran the ball to the other side and sailed a three point basket. St. James answered back with four more unanswered points and forced Coach Flora to use a timeout to consult with his team. Hartley of St. James jammed another three pointer when the action resumed and Lydia Kemnitzer of St. James netted another three to end the quarter. St. James kept the momentum going into the last quarter. There was a running clock and they netted three more points.
