Hillsboro Hawks Edge Past Eagles At Home

The Eagles basketball team collapsed early and struggled on Tuesday. The loss brought Sullivan’s record to 11-7, but Hillsboro’s was extended to 13-6. The strong Hawks kept Sullivan at bay, despite Drake Gawer and Sam Summers having big nights. Sullivan fell to Hillsboro, 63-55.

In the first quarter, the Eagles struggled from the start. Sullivan’s head coach Dino McKinney took a timeout with a little less than five and a half minutes and the Eagles were down by ten. Gawer drained a big three point basket with 4:21 on the clock. Coach McKinney took another timeout with a little over three minutes left. Aiden Kirk dropped in a layup and Gawer slammed another big three. Kirk notched a three point basket under thirty seconds and Sullivan was down, 22-13.

In the second quarter, Sullivan kept up the three point baskets, but couldn’t grab the lead. Kirk landed another three point basket and Hillsboro’s Nick Marchetti answered back with a layup. Cambrian Koch drained a much needed layup and Coach McKinney took a timeout with a little over five and a half minutes left. Summers added two free throws and Gavin Dace scored one. Kirk sent in a layup from under the hoop after Hillsboro’s Dominic Sutton notched a three pointer. Summer landed another layup and Gawer continued his big night with another three point basket. Hillsboro’s Greg Robinson finished the quarter with a layup, 34-28.

In the third quarter, the Hawks continued their strength into the second half. Hillsboro’s Kieren Jones added to their lead and Summers broke up the scores with a layup. Gavin Dace racked up two layups back to back and the Hawks took a timeout with a little over four minutes left. Hillsboro’s Luka Pool stole the ball and scored on a fast break layup and Marchetti landed a three point basket with under a minute left. Summers answered back with a layup of his own with under thirty seconds left and Marchetti answered back with under ten left. Hillsboro held a strong lead, 52-36.

In the final quarter, the Eagles added nineteen points, but fell short. Coach McKinney took a timeout to talk to his team with less than five minutes left. Chris Glaser notched a much needed three point basket and Hillsboro’s Noah Holland added two layups back to back.  Gawer ran up another three pointer and Glaser followed with the same. The Hawks took a timeout with a little over three minutes left. Summers drained a layup and Hillsboro took a timeout after they landed a three point basket. Glaser nailed another three point basket from beyond the arc and Koch finished with a layup with less than a minute left.

Summers led the team with 13 points and Gawer followed with 12. Kirk claimed 10 points and Glaser followed with nine. Gavin Dace finished with seven and Koch tallied four.
