Eagles Split Against Washington, Hermann
Sullivan’s baseball team split games against Washington and Hermann last week to close out the regular season.
The boys bounced back to beat Hermann 6-4 after a 15-3 loss to Washington.
The Eagles entered Monday’s first round of district play with an 8-10 record.
Sullivan received a first-round bye and faced Salem.
The winner advances to Thursday’s championship game at Owensville against St. Clair or Owensville.
Washington
The Blue Jays took the early lead in the game and held on from there.
Washington scored three times in the first inning.
Sullivan answered back when Cambrian Koch was walked by Washington. Tyler Hopen helped bridge the gap when he hit into a sacrifice to advance Koch to third. Gavin Schmidt helped score Koch on a sacrifice RBI and the Eagles were on the board in the bottom of the first.
Washington added another run in the second on Landon Boston’s sacrifice fly.
Sullivan responded with an RBI single by Hopen when they came to bat.
The Blue Jays took control of the game at the top of the fifth. Sullivan’s Head Coach Ian Whitson made a pitching change and put Schmidt on the mound. He walked Sam Paule and Hayden Burns followed by smacking a double. Gavin Mitchell singled and tallied another run.
The bases were loaded when Grant Trentmann was walked and brought in another run. Jack Schnatz hit a line drive to left field and scored three runs and gave him a double.
Washington wasn’t done scoring yet and Cooper Thiemann landed on first. Seth Roewe added another RBI to the score and after Sullivan made a pitching change and put Dayton Skaggs on the mound.
Washington scored seven runs in the inning to take an 11-2 lead.
They added four more in the sixth.
Schmidt recorded two hits and Hopen and Skaggs each got a hit.
Hermann
Sullivan bounced back one night later.
The Eagles were scrappy and irrepressible from the beginning and defeated the Bearcats 6-4.
The first inning started after two outs, there were runners on first and second. The Eagles found themselves down after two errors and the bases were loaded, but Sullivan got out without giving up a score. The boys got their runs started at the bottom of the second inning. After an out, starting pitcher, Drake Gawer, landed a ball in the outfield. It was a high fly ball that just dropped quick and the outfielders missed. Valley received a walk and after an out Hopen drilled a ball to the outfield and Sullivan was on the board.
Hermann answered back at their next at bat. Hermann’s JJ Mundwiller was walked and Kenny Hoener III hit a huge double to score the run. Charlie Tyree got a single and the Bearcats scored again before the side was retired. Hermann was up by one. Sullivan wasn’t fazed and took the lead back their next at bat. Skaggs landed on first after the catcher dropped a ball. Lane Blankenship hit a line drive and the bases were loaded. Trey Behrens was drilled by a pitch and a run was scored. Valley beaned another ball into left field and the bases were loaded again. Andrew Starr came in as courtesy runner for Rice and scored on a wild pitch. Another run was scored, and Behrens scored on another wild pitch off the catcher’s head.
In the top of the fifth inning, Hermann added more runs to the board. The now pitcher, Reese Rehmart, landed on first. Mundwiller and Parker Anderson both walked and the bases were loaded. Gawer got a balk and a run was scored.
The Bearcats scored another run and the last out was recorded when Koch made a fantastic diving catch. Sullivan’s next at bat had more runs added. Skaggs landed on first drive after a line drive. He stole a base and Blankenship scored the RBI when he slammed a ball to the outfield. Sullivan loaded the bases again in the inning but the final score was 6-4.
Sullivan had two pitchers on mound and the two collectively recorded six strikeouts.
They only gave up the four runs and seven hits. Koch was the relief pitcher and he didn’t give up a single run.
Gawer went 2-2 and Skaggs was 2-3 on the day. This was their last game before districts where Sullivan is seeded third.
