Eagles Consistent At Jamboree
The Sullivan Eagles are ready to roll for their 2021 football season. Sullivan started their journey at the Jamboree on Friday and faced Salem, Jefferson R-7 and Herculaneum.
Each team got 12 plays on offense and 12 plays on the defense. Sullivan got a chance to see how a variety of their opponents would be this season.
Sullivan’s defense picked up right where it left off last season and dominated Salem during their first outing. The defense shined and stopped Salem without Salem crossing the endzone. The Eagles really knew how to read the plays of their opponents, and the height of Gavin Dace helped him to break up a big pass made by the Tigers.
When the Eagles offense took the field for the first time, Gabe Dace took control of the starting quarterback position. He found one of his receivers wide open after a run. Head Coach Eddie Haar gave Robert York a try at quarterback at the Jamboree and York seemed like a veteran at his first showing. He made an excellent pitch against Salem that kept the ball moving for Sullivan.
Sullivan’s defense almost picked off Jefferson R-7 at their first offense play but they made their way to score once. Franky Erxleben was no stranger to running plays after last season and marched down the field against the Blue Jays.
Herculaneum tried to stop the now motivated Eagles, but Sullivan surged right past the Blackcats. Erxleben made a huge run down the left side of the field and Sullivan was faced with a second down. Gabe Dace connected on a screen pass and Sullivan scored. After the huge plays, Haar made a substitution and brought in York to finish out their last six plays on offense. He found Ian King wide open in the endzone and Sullivan scored again. The Blackcats were visibly shaken, finding themselves at fourth down before they connected on a short pass. Their quarterback had a couple bad snaps over his head and even a false start on their outing.
“We moved the ball consistently,” Coach Haar said about the night. “We kept it real simple for the guys. We’re really proud of their efforts tonight. Obviously, we have some things we have to clean up. We got everybody in, and we had some good reps from everyone and, overall, we’re pretty excited about it.”
