Boys And Girls Basketball Fall In Games This Week

The boys and girls basketball teams recentlyplayed in their first games back after the holiday break. The boys traveled to Northwest Cedar Hill on Friday and the Lady Eagles played at home against Potosi on Thursday. The boys basketball team came up short on Friday by two points, 35-33. Official stats were unavailable at press time. The Lady Eagles fell to Potosi by a heartbreaking one point, 37-36.

In the first quarter, Potosi took the lead early. Dakayla McClain drew first blood for the Lady Eagles and Potosi scored a three pointer. Potosi’s Kya Gibson drained a layup and shot from the free throw line. Potosi’s Nora Henry landed a layup and a free throw. Delaney George netted a free throw in the quarter, but Potosi led, 12-3.

In the second quarter, Potosi kept the domination of the first half. They added to their score and their new head coach, Dori McRaven took a timeout. Potosi’s Blair Sitton netted a layup and drew a foul. Potosi’s Kaydence Gibson did the same thing. The Lady Eagles then came alive when Abby Peterson landed two layups back to back. Molly Lohden shot a three point basket but missed and drew a foul. Sitton notched a basket and two free throws after a timeout. Potosi’s Paige West streaked down the court and landed a layup to end the first half. The Lady Trojans led Sullivan at the end of the first half, 21-7.

In the third quarter, the Lady Eagles regrouped and were more motivated in the second half. Kylee McReynolds drained a huge three point basket. Kyra Gibson answered back with a layup and McReynolds netted another three pointer. Kyra Gibson netted another layup and Kaydence Gibson followed with a three point basket. Head Coach Jordan Flora took a timeout with four minutes and twenty seconds on the clock. Peterson landed a layup and Kyra Gibson added another layup. George notched another two free throws and Olivia Witt followed with a big three point basket. Coach McRaven took another timeout and Sitton scored another layup with under a minute left. Peterson drained a three point basket at the buzzer and Sullivan was down, 32-23.

In the final quarter, Sullivan put up a big fight and lost in a heartbreaker. Peterson drained a big three point shot right away and George did the same thing, Potosi landed a free throw and Peterson scored a layup from right under the hoop. Potosi answered back with a layup and Coach Flora took a timeout. Coach McRaven followed with a timeout and Witt landed a much needed three point basket. Peterson made a fast break to the basket and landed a layup to give Sullivan the lead. Potosi didn’t like that and took a timeout. Kyra Gibson missed a free throw and the Sullivan home crowd loved it. Kaydence Gibson missed her free throws with less than 15 seconds left. Potosi scooped up the rebound and landed a basket right under the hoop and the final score was 37-36.

Peterson led in points with 16. Witt, George, and McReynolds followed with six. McClain claimed two points.

Sullivan’s defense excelled and forced 15 turnovers. Lohden led with five. George, McReynolds, and Peterson each forced two. Alex Bylo, Raegan Johnson, DaPhane Polanowski, and Hayli Venable each had one. Sullivan collectively had seven steals. Bylo, George, Johnson, McReynolds, Peterson, Venable, and Witt all had one. The Lady Eagles recorded 23 rebounds. Peterson led with nine and was followed by George with four. Lohden, McClain, McReynolds, and Witt each had two. Johnson and Venable finished with one.
