11/22 Eagle Report

As the seasons change, so too changes the seasons of sport at Sullivan high school, bringing in boy’s and girl’s basketball over the next three months or so.

The Eagles boy’s team finished with a 16-12 overall record and a District tournament title before falling in the first round of State competition to MICDS (Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School). Their season started out on a decent enough run before hitting a patch of losses near the end of their schedule. Their form improved for District play, but ultimately the outfit from St. Louis city were able to overcome the Eagles and end their season 49-37.

The team has four seniors that will be gearing up for their final campaign in Cambrian Koch, Ian Tutterow, Max Avery and Matt Mallory. Their four juniors are Brayden White, Christopher Glaser, Mikeldon Taylor-Gray and Seth Valley. There are seven sophomores, Peyton Malady, Mitchell Garner, Chase Blue, Nolan Ulrich, Caleb Kwok, Chase Rasmussen and Cameron York.

The Sullivan boys team are fortunate to have fielded ten freshman players that are eager to learn and contribute in their own ways. They are Holden King, Spencer Thomure, Cash Ray, Raiden Redd, Logan Podner, Zaiden Marler, Chase Black, Albert Wiles, Jackson House and Wyatt Smith.

The squad will be opening up play on the year after Thanksgiving with the FCNB Bank-It Championship, with the final game of that tournament wrapping up on Friday December 1.

On the Lady Eagles’ side, the team comes off of a 11-15 record in their 2022-23 campaign, falling to a tough Salem team that Sullivan played to a tough 46-52 result in Districts. The team fell into some rough play before rattling off a string of wins including a thrilling road win against a strong Cuba Wildcats team.

The three seniors on the Lady Eagles squad are Hayli Venable, Delaney George and Raegan Johnson. Their three juniors are Molly Lohden, Cora Shetley and Rayna Claus. The team has five sophomores in Avery Merkel, Evelynn Harris, Tessa Newman, Olivia Schansberg and Natasha Hayes.

Like the boys side, the girls are blessed with a slew of freshmen that turned up for basketball in 2023. They are Syndey Montee, Ella Kirk, Eden Lambert, Addison Fore, Klare Harbour, Lily Schmuke, Karlee Head, Ava Hayes, Olivia Barton and McKynlee Peterson.

The Lady Eagles team started off the year with a tough 44-21 home loss to Montgomery County this past Friday evening, a very tough team from a year ago. The team will try to focus on their tournament task, the 9th Annual Fountain City Classic, which will wrap up on Saturday December 2.

It should be an exciting season for both teams as the flashes of capability are certainly there. Getting out to a strong start is what both teams would like to see, but working all of the new freshmen in to see what their strengths are will be a focus for both schedules
