Leonard Leroy Key, 85 of Huntsville, MO, formerly of Sullivan, passed away Friday, November 19, 2021, at Brunswick Nursing and Rehab center.

He was born to Clarence and Madge (Bell) Key on leap year February 29, 1936, in Sullivan.

He graduated from Sullivan High School class of 1954.  Leonard worked for the Ramco Corporation until he enlisted in the United States Army September 1957 and after going through boot camp he stayed in the reserves on inactive duty.

On October 15,1960, he married Glenda Rae Glaser at St.John’s United Church of Christ in Bem.

He was then drafted into active service October 1961 at the time of the Berlin crisis and served until honorably discharged in August 1962. He then began working the Meramec Mines at Pea Ridge until 1979. During those years he raised two boys, instilling in them a love for deer hunting by taking them to their Great uncle Wibur’s farm to hunt. He passed on to them a love for the outdoors and fishing. He took them on a Southwest Ontario fly-in-fishing trip. An enjoyment for sports was passed on as well as he helped in coaching their little league baseball teams. He taught by example the value of working with his hands to build and repair things in taking care of his family.

In the last half of his working career, he learned to weld initially working as a welder in the construction at the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant and then after recovering from a bad vehicle accident worked in maintenance at St. Louis Care Unit and then Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan.

After retirement he enjoyed various woodworking projects until macular degeneration took most of his eyesight.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Madge.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Glenda of Huntsville; sons David Key (wife Kris) of Moberly and John Key( wife Kelly) of Arnold; sister Joann Weiskopf of Sullivan; grandchildren, Michelle Price( husband Brandon), Jennifer, Michael, Amy, Ryan, and Dana Key, step grandchildren Justin Alderson (wife Janet) and Max Eaton; and great grandchildren , Karmyn and Awesome Frakes, Wesley and Emily Price.

Donations can be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery maintenance fund or Macular Degeneration Research Foundation.

Memorial service to be scheduled at a later date. 

Arrangements entrusted to Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville.
