John ‘Jack’ Cavanaugh

John “Jack” Joseph Cavanaugh, 89, of Sullivan, MO, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 5, 2021. He was surrounded by his loving family.

John was born on January 14, 1932 in St. Louis, MO, to John Joseph Cavanaugh and Dorothy Westermeyer. He attended Saint Vincent Catholic School in St. Louis. Jack had a beautiful singing voice, and at the tender age of 9, he sang Ava Maria as a Christmas Eve solo. Sadly, Jacks father passed away before he was even born, and his beloved mother passed when he was just 12 years old. His aunt and uncle, Regina and Harry Westermeyer, finished raising him and loved him like their own.

Jack was employed by C. W. Johnson Cadillac in St. Louis for 20 years, he was an assistant parts manager for Clinton Cadillac for 10 years, and lastly, in the computer department of Autronics Radio until he retired in 1994. After retiring, Jack did work part-time at Dollar General for a couple of years, and he really loved it.

Jack was united in marriage to Gloria Hughes on December 24, 1975 in Clayton, MO. Together they blended their families, which included six children. Family was everything to Jack. After living in St. Louis all of his working life, Jack and Gloria made their home in Hernando, Florida for seven years, and returned to Missouri in April 2008. Jack enjoyed watching TV, putting puzzles together and woodworking. He was known as a GM man who loved his Cadillac’s, especially his Coup, which he kept spotless. Jack was a member of Saint Anthony Catholic Church.

Jack is survived by his wife, Gloria (Hughes) Cavanaugh, of Sullivan, MO; six children: Jacqueline Gibson of South County, MO, James Cavanaugh and wife Robin of Manchester, MO, Jeannine Mueller and husband Kirk of Arnold, MO, John Cavanaugh and wife Diann of Arnold, MO, Cynthia Cavanaugh of South County, MO, and Pamela Libby and husband Richard of Sullivan, MO; twelve grandchildren: Justin Gibson and wife Kelly, Danny and Corey Gibson, Ryan and Traigh Cavanaugh, Courtney Mueller, Jared Mueller and fiancé, Allison Ruemker, Johnny, Sarah and Elizabeth Cavanaugh, Shawn Wallace and wife Stacey, and Crystal Sieveking and husband Jason; five great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Nathan, Evelynn, Dianna and Jaxson; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Cavanaugh and Dorothy Westermeyer; his aunt and uncle, Regina and Harry Westermeyer; as well as numerous other aunts and uncles, cousins and many friends.

Visitation was held from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Memorial Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Sullivan.

Memorial contributions in Jack’s memory may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.
