George A. Lewis Sr.

George A. Lewis Sr., 73, of Sullivan, MO, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 22, 2022.

George Arthur Lewis was born on May 20, 1948 to Homer and Lillian (Merrit) Lewis in Rolla, MO. He grew up and attended school in Sullivan and graduated with the class of 1966. Following graduation, he enlisted into the United States Air Force, where he honorably served our country for four years. In 1969, George was united in marriage to JoAnn Lawrence, and to their union a son was born, George Lewis Jr. Sadly, they later divorced.

After his discharge in 1971, George went to work at the Post Office in Anchorage, Alaska where he began his lifelong career as a postal worker for the United States Postal Service. He was employed by the postal service for 40+ years, working in Anchorage, St. Charles and eventually Union, MO.

Outside of working, George loved to hunt, fish and go bowling. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends at the Eagles Hall in Sullivan.

George is survived by his two sons, George Lewis Jr. and wife Corrine of Branson, MO and John Torres and wife Melissa of Cleveland, OH; four grandchildren: George Lewis III and wife Jule, Adrian Torres and wife Maria, Devin & Jasmine Torres; two great-grandchildren: Braxton & River, and one additional great-grandchild on the way, Halstyn; a sister, Suzzane Hoevelman and husband Dan of Sullivan, MO; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer & Lillian; and an infant brother, Homer.

Arrangements for cremation have taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held 5 p.m., Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the Eagles Hall in Sullivan.
