Fred C. Hertel, 82, of Bourbon, MO, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at Missouri Baptist Hospital – Sullivan.

Frederick Carl Hertel was born February 9, 1939 in Butts, MO, to Carl and Lucille (Gormley) Hertel. He grew up and attended school in Bourbon and graduated with the class of 1957. After graduation, he went on to further his education in Springfield, MO, where he obtained his Associates Degree. He then returned home to Bourbon and worked alongside his father at Hertel’s Market.

Fred then met the love of his life, Betty Weber. They were united in marriage on May 2, 1959 and were blessed with three children: Robin, Regina & Tracy. Together they raised their family in Bourbon. He soon bought Hertel’s Market from his father, Carl, and served the Bourbon Community for 45+ years. Fred was also named the Bourbon Citizen of the Year in the early 90’s. He was always a friendly face within the community and never met a stranger.

Fred was a kind and gentle man. He was very faithful to the Lord and attended several churches in Bourbon over the span of his life, serving in ministry as a deacon, treasurer, and Sunday school teacher. He was a true loving Christian, loving husband and wonderful father. He will be so dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty, of Bourbon, MO; a son, Tracy and wife Kathy of Saint Clair, MO; two daughters, Robin Spence and husband Herschel of Union, MO & Regina Hertel of Bourbon, MO; three grandchildren: Sean Hertel, Jeanine Schmuke and husband Dave, & Ryan Pyatt and wife Crystal; six great-grandchildren: Tristan, Zaccary, Shaylie, Sydney, Sebastion & Serenity; two sisters, Helen Gramelspacher of Arnold, MO & Wilma Jean Remmert of Scottsdale, AZ; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl & Lucille; & two brothers-in-law, Bud Remmert & Hillary Gramelspacher.

Funeral Services were 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the Eaton Funeral Home with Mike Delashmit officiating. Interment followed in Bourbon Cemetery.

Visitation was 4 – 8 p.m., Monday, December 27, 2021 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
