Sullivan’s Roof Top Food Drive Marks 29 Years Of Helping Local Families

A Sullivan holiday tradition returns Friday morning as the Chamber of Commerce, KTUI Radio and Sullivan Independent News kick off the 29th annual Roof Top Food Drive to benefit Meramec Community Mission.

The broadcast and collection event begins at 7:30 a.m. in downtown Sullivan. KTUI’s Sam Scott and Chamber Director Tasha Head will anchor coverage from the grandstand, while Independent News editor James Bartle and sports broadcaster Wyatt Hardy take to the roof.

The food drive helps stock the mission’s pantry for the winter and holiday season. Donations of non-perishable food items and funds will be accepted throughout the day.

This year’s event carries special meaning for Bartle, who will dedicate his time on the roof to his late aunt, Judith “Judy” Bishop.

“Aunt Judy always stopped by to tease me on the roof and support the drive,” Bartle said. “She also turned to the mission for help after health issues kept her out of work, so being up there in her memory feels right.”

The Roof Top Food Drive began in 1997, when organizers braved sleet and 25-mph winds from a downtown rooftop. The event has since rotated through several locations and raised thousands of dollars and countless meals for local families.
