Help Wanted: MoDOT Hiring For Winter Weather Help

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is gearing up for snow season — and they need more hands on deck.

The agency announced it is hiring full-time maintenance workers and emergency maintenance equipment operators to help keep Missouri’s 33,000 miles of state roads safe and clear during the winter months.

MoDOT currently employs about 2,400 maintenance workers statewide, but officials say that number falls short when winter storms hit.

“Treating and maintaining our roadways during winter are critical services that help Missouri travelers get where they need to be as safely as possible,” said Darin Hamelink, MoDOT’s State Maintenance Director. “We’re pleased to offer flexible options and encourage anyone with prior experience who’s looking to supplement their pay or serve their community to apply.”

To attract more applicants, MoDOT is offering two flexible shift options — an eight-hour shift or a 12-hour shift — to accommodate both full-time employees and those looking for temporary or part-time winter work.

The minimum starting wage is $19.91 per hour, with an additional $3 to $6 per hour depending on the area of operation. Pay for full-time maintenance positions varies by experience.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check. While a commercial driver’s license (CDL) permit is preferred for full-time positions, emergency operators must already hold a CDL.

MoDOT notes that a prior misdemeanor or felony conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant.

Officials say the goal is to have additional operators trained and ready before the first major snow or ice event of the season.

“Our crews are on the front lines when winter weather hits,” Hamelink said. “The more help we have, the faster we can keep Missouri moving safely.”
