Retired Trooper, Local Mentor Donald Storie Passes
The local community is mourning the loss of a true treasure—Donald “Don” Storie—who passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025. Storie was a respected former member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) and a familiar face at the Sullivan Bomgaars farm store, formerly Orscheln Farm and Home.
According to MSHP records, Storie began his career with the Highway Patrol on November 1, 1966, as a CUE Inspector I. He entered the recruit program on June 1, 1967, and officially became a Trooper on October 13 of that year.
His strong character and unwavering determination helped him rise quickly through the ranks. He was promoted to Trooper First Class on August 13, 1972; Corporal of Troop C Support on March 1, 1980; and finally to Sergeant on October 1, 1986. He served with distinction until his retirement on November 1, 1998.
Not one to stay idle, Storie began a second career in 1999 at Orscheln Farm and Home in Sullivan, which was later acquired by Bomgaars. Standing at 6’4”, Don was hard to miss in the store, often seen helping customers with a warm smile and a quick sense of humor.
For many shoppers, he became known as “the go-to guy” thanks to his vast knowledge, dedication to customer service, and his approachable, humble nature. To his coworkers—both during his time with the Patrol and at the store—Storie was more than just a colleague. He was a mentor and role model, someone who led by example and earned respect through his integrity, strong work ethic, and genuine kindness.
Tributes poured in following his passing, with many posting photos and memories to the Russell Colonial Funeral Home memorial page in St. Clair. One touching message came from MSHP Trooper John Oliveras of Troop C, who wrote:
“Don Storie was one of the best supervisors I ever had. Such a good and humble person."
Storie’s legacy of service, mentorship, and quiet strength will be long remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
