Football Drops Second Game To Jefferson City

The Eagles (0-2) led by one point going into the fourth quarter, but the Jays (1-1) rallied from behind in crunch time. They mounted a two-touchdown comeback to beat Sullivan 35-22 on Friday, Sept. 6.

The Eagles relied more heavily on their ground game to move the chains after their 14-12 loss against Northwest (Cedar Hill).

Chase Blue was Sullivan’s leading rusher at 213 yards on 23 carries, averaging 9.26 per handoff. He recorded all three of their touchdowns and dashed eighty yards for his first.

Mark Jennings powered through the Jays for 93 yards on 15 rushes.

Oliver Borton ran for nine yards on three carries.

Eagles quarterback Robert York II also used his legs to pick up first downs. He gained 68 yards on his ten scrambles. The senior sneaked into the end zone for one of Sullivan’s two-point conversions and passed to his brother Cameron for the other.

R. York threw for 58 yards, completing 4 of his six attempts. His longest pass of the night was a 46-yard dart to Seth Valley.

Valley led the Eagles with 52 receiving yards on three catches.

Game Recap

The Eagles tried to capitalize on their opening drive but failed to convert on fourth and long.

The Jays went scoreless on their following possession. R. York forced a 4th down after blowing up a Jefferson City screen.

Sullivan still struggled to move the chains when returning on offense. The Eagles botched their punt attempt on a low snap, allowing the Jays to start 40 yards from the endzone. Jefferson City capitalized, and running back Jaiden LaViolette crossed the goal line, beginning the second quarter with an 8-0 lead.

Chase Blue responded with an eighty-yard touchdown for Sullivan. R. York made a crucial block that allowed Blue to cut to the left and race out the Jays for a score. The Eagles hoped to tie it but failed to complete their two-point conversion.

Jefferson City continued to work at full speed, with quarterback Alex Wilson scrambling in the end zone for a 14-6 lead.

Blue found a gap on the following drive and burst through the defensive line to put the Eagles back on the board. R. York faked a handoff for two points, slid to the right, and slung the game-tying pass to his brother Cameron.
