Football Triumphs 28-7 Over Owensville
The Eagles (6-2) soared to a 28-7 conference victory over Owensville (4-4) on Friday, Oct. 13.
Sullivan last beat the Dutchmen in the district semifinals the previous year, where they won 36-7 to advance to the championship.
The Eagles delivered a strong defensive performance last Friday, effectively shutting down many 4th-down conversion attempts.
In protecting the nest, head coach Eddie Haar credits his players and coaches for their overall tough effort. “We have continued to work on the defensive side and our kids have continued to work and be coached hard and it came together for us,” he stated.
Sullivan caused Owensville to have three turnovers on offense as well as a blocked field goal.
During the windy night, kicker Wyatt Kraus successfully converted all four extra points.
The breeze did not impact quarterback Robert York II either, as he managed to throw three deep touchdown passes, totaling 90 yards with four receptions.
Franky Erxleben led the team with 105 rushing yards on 12 carries, followed by Dominic Ransom with 60 yards, York with 39, Dayton Skaggs with 19 and Jeremiah Rodriguez and Chase Blue both contributing 6 yards.
Seth Valley led the team in receiving yards with 29, followed by Colton Brendel with 25, Dominic Ransom with 24 and Erxleben with 12.
Sullivan’s first score of the game came on 3rd and 10 when York connected with tight end Brendel for a 26-yard touchdown during their opening drive.
A few minutes later, after Owensville tied it up 7-7, linebacker Erxleben executed a successful fake punt, sliding through the Dutchmen to pick up a first down.
When the Eagles’ offense came back on the field, running back Erxleben broke through the defensive line, gaining 32 yards to give Sullivan a 14-7 lead.
As the first quarter’s final minute ticked away, Erxleben worked his magic again blocking a Dutchmen field goal attempt, which defensive lineman Rodriguez returned to Owensville’s 24-yard-line.
Right after, Ransom caught a quick pass from York and raced into the end zone to extend the Eagle’s lead to 21-7.
As York was breaking loose with his arm, Owensville quarterback Blake Elliot was escaping under pressure from Eagle defenders all night. He was intercepted by Brendel, who bobbled the ball but caught it and ran to midfield, where he fumbled it, but Sullivan scooped it back up for a clutch fumble recovery.
But, with 30 seconds left until halftime, the Dutchmen struck back, intercepting York’s pass as he attempted to throw to Brendel at midfield.
Defensive back Curtis Rall wasn’t going to allow an Owensville comeback and regained possession with his own interception to cap off the 2nd quarter.
The second half’s only score came on 4th and 8 when York connected with Seth Valley on a 26-yard pass.
With 2:30 left in the 4th quarter, Erxleben put the final nail in the coffin on a fumble recovery and the Eagles left Owensville as champions over their conference rivals.
Upcoming Events
The Eagles will travel to North County on Thursday, Oct. 19, for their last regular season game at 7 p.m.
Regarding their upcoming game, Haar said, “North County is very well coached by Coach Jones and his staff; they do a great job down there… We will have to be ready for anything and everything that comes our way.”
