Man Taken Into Custody After 5-Hour Standoff At Washington PD
A man on Friday was taken into custody and transported to Mercy Hospital following a five-hour standoff at the Washington Police Department.
The 54-year-old male duct taped two large knives to his hands and proclaimed that he was going to die and that law enforcement officers would execute him.
According to the Washington Police Department, the incident began around 5:45 a.m. when the man parked in the middle of the parking lot.
As the officer contacted the male, he opened the door of the vehicle and was holding two large knives. The officers tried to talk to the male, but he was difficult to understand. The officer requested assistance from other officers.
When the other officers arrived, they began to talk to the subject to see what he wanted or needed. The officers were able to recognize the subject needed mental health assistance.
For approximately five hours, officers talked with the male to see what could be done to assist him and to try to get the subject to put the knives down. At one point during the incident the male used duct tape to secure the knives to his hands.
The male told officers he was going to die today, and law enforcement was going to do it. The male also threw a note out the window of the vehicle that indicated the same.
Officers reassured the male that was not our purpose, and we did not want to hurt him, we just wanted him to put the knives down so we could assist him.
During this incident officers provided the subject with several items he requested, we also allowed him to speak to a mental health professional, clergy, and family members in an attempt to get him to put the knives down and come out of the vehicle peacefully.
The subject exited the vehicle at one point and officers used less lethal weapons to disarm the male and take him into custody.
