SRO Recommending Changes To Speed Limit, One Way Street

Bourbon School Resource Officer Dane Wheeler is recommending changes to the speed limit on Old Highway 66 near the high school and making a section Jost Street one-way.

Wheeler was not present at the Bourbon City Council’s Sept. 20 meeting, but provided a report to Mayor Dave Lafferty outlining his requests.

Lafferty said that Wheeler would like to see the city change the speed limit at the high school during certain hours.

“There are issues with the buses pulling out of the high school lot,” Lafferty said.

Wheeler is recommending the city drop the speed limit to 20 mph during drop-off and pickup. Warning lights would be placed ahead of the area indicating to motorists that the limit is about to drop.

Lafferty said police officers would have to set up in the area to get drivers used to the change.

He also said the school should help pay the signs.

Changing the speed limit would have to be done by ordinance, but the Missouri Department of Transportation would have to do a traffic study.

Lafferty said that could take months.

The other change Wheeler wants to see is making Jost Street one-way from the three-way at Old Highway 66 to Starhawk Drive.

Starhawk Drive is already a one-way street to Old Springfield Road.

The city council did not take any action.
