Enthusiasm High As Lady Eagles Open Season
Spirits are high and there is plenty of enthusiasm as the Lady Eagles track and field team prepares to open the 2022 season.
Head Coach Terry Wood said practices have gone well.
"Practices have been great," Wood said. “There are lots of athletes to work with this year and each of them seems eager to learn and grow. That makes things easy as a coach."
The upperclassman are not only being counted on to perform on the track, but also have taken leadership roles with younger athletes.
"Our upperclassmen have really taken ownership of the team and are even serving as pseudo assistant coaches," Wood said. "I see a lot of strength in my seniors. Their leadership has been stellar. Loren and Adia Halmick have stepped up to help me out immensely with the distance crew. Ashley Volkert is working closely with Coach Johnston to help younger kiddos with the hurdles. Adi Barton and Rachel Hesse help tirelessly with our javelin people. Summer Redd and Hiley Pritchett have been coaching up the shot and discus people. Our strength will be all of this ownership and investment on the front end of the season from the senior class."
Sullivan is also looking to rebuild their team. Reagan Thomure was a vital part of the team's success and she graduated after a terrific high school career.
"Ultimately, we are young," Wood said. "We're building on a solid foundation from our current sophomore class and their youthful successes from last year. We've got a lot of specific instruction that needs to happen, but as long as the optimism remains, we'll be in good shape when the time comes. Missing Reagan will be tough, but I think we will balance out well."
Wood is excited to see another great season unfold.
"I look for us to cover a lot of events this year," Coach Wood finished with. "With more numbers on our roster, more events get filled. Our spring crew is solid and we return a lot from last year. Throws looks interesting. We're deep with talent up there and should see something interesting out of the rings and the javelin."
