Bourbon High School Teacher Joins Relief Efforts At Polish-Ukranian Border
Bourbon High School teacher JD Huitt has taken an extended leave of absence and joined the relief efforts at the Polish-Ukrainian border.
Huitt is recording a video diary that can be viewed here. Huitt is working with World Central Kitchen to feed people.
In his first dispatch, Huitt approaches the border as people welcome Ukranian immigrants.
"A lot of them are looking for sanctuary and refuge," Huitt said. "They are escaping the violence that has descended upon their homes and towns."
Video taken by Huitt shows several tents set up along a border town helping people immediately as they cross into Poland. Mothers can be seen coming through with their small children as they grab diapers and formula.
Huitt said that some people who enter are doing well, while others are in tears.
"It's a sad situation all around," he said.
Huitt explained that it was difficult to take the journey.
"I really struggled if I wanted to do this or not," said Huitt, adding that he decided to go after encouragement from friends. "People can see the consequences when a tyrant like (Vladimir) Putin is allowed to do what he's doing now. I also want to show how good people are."
