Icy Roads Lead To Deadly Crashes Throughout State

A winter storm that began Wednesday and ended Thursday provided the conditions for deadly crashes across Missouri.

Four fatal accidents were investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol between Thrusday and Friday.

Three of the crashes occurred Thursday.

A Warsaw, Mo., woman was involved in an accident Thursday afternoon on Interstate 44 at the 253 mile-marker.

Catherine Lewis, 74, died early Friday morning.

A St. Peters man died Thursday afternoon in an accident on Interstate at the 184 mile marker in Phelps County.

John E. Mattingly, 52, slid on a patch of ice in a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, struck a guard rail and embankment, then overturned.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Thursday night, an Ashland man was killed on Highway 63 in Boone County.

His vehicle began to skid on the ice-covered roadway. He went off the left side of the road, struck a sign, a culvert and overturned.

He was not wearing a seat belt.

John Forsee, 54, was pronounced dead a few hours later at Boone County Hospital.

Early Friday morning, a Ballwin teen was killed on Interstate 70 in Callaway County.

Justin Tognozzi, 18, lost control on the ice-covered Interstate 70 and struck a vehicle that was stopped for a crash.
