Extreme Caution Encouraged With Drought Conditions And Fireworks Displays

The Sullivan Independent News spoke with Sullivan Fire Chief Eric Lewis on Monday, June 26, ahead of the big July Fourth celebrations that often bring large fireworks displays in many communities and by many individuals during a growing drought in the State of Missouri.

Sullivan Fire Chief Eric Lewis said the district has been monitoring drought conditions and Missouri Division of Fire Safety statements.

Lewis stated that with the drought conditions worsening in Missouri, the Division of Fire Safety  is encouraging residents to put fireworks safety first as they prepare for Independence Day.

More than 93 percent of the state is currently experiencing a drought.

“We are encouraging people to be extremely cautious as this could be a very dangerous time for fires in ouur area and across the state,” Lewis said.

In 2022, around 324 people in Missouri sought medical treatment from fireworks injuries, with 292 of those being treated in emergency rooms and 32 needing admission into the hospital, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS).

Missouri residents are encouraged to purchase fireworks from licensed retailers; only use fireworks in a large open space clear from flammable materials; keep a garden hose and bucket of water close; always dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water first before putting them in trash; never shoot fireworks off in a glass jar or container and never store fireworks from season to season.

Residents in the city of Sullivan are prohibited from discharging fireworks.
