Council Approves Requests, Ordinance And HVAC Contract

The Sullivan City Council met in open session on Tuesday, May 18, with two requests before them, one ordinance, payment of the monthly bills, a bid approval for a new HVAC system and one matter of action in closed session.

Elizabeth Keller, 5K-Den Run appeared on behalf of the Kaden Keller Foundation, seeking council approval to hold the annual race once again to benefit local ill children on September 11, 2021 at 8 a.m. The run will cover the streets of Lilac, Bon Oaks, Mattox Dr., and Land Dr. and Campbell Chapman Sports Complex. A virtual run is also being planned to limit event size in preparations of the current pandemic.

The event received unanimous approval.

The Meramec Community Fair submitted several requests for the City Council for three separate liquor license permits for the track area, concert stage and rodeo area, for June 24-26. The council approved the liquor license requests.

The council also approved the Meramec Community Fair Parade, scheduled for Tuesday, June 22, beginning with lineup around 4:30 p.m. and parade kickoff at 6 p.m. This will again require street closures on Grigsby, and the parade route through downtown to Clark St. to Springfield Rd. concluding at “Sunny” Jim Bottomley Park.

Sullivan Retiring Police Chief George R. Counts will serve as Grand Marshall of the parade.

The council awarded a bid for an additional HVAC system for Sullivan City Hall compatible to the system installed recently but this is for the council Chamber and Court system. The bid was awarded to Head’s Heating and Cooling in the amount of $13,247.21.

The council approved Ordinance 3919 which allows for a system of adjustments to the borders of the downtown business area involving lots adjacent to Clark Avenue, Meredith Lane and Church St. whenever a consolidation or subdivision of a lot is given final approval by the Mayor and Board.

Under Aldermen Input, Alderman Paul McCulloch and Alderman Jason Alexander reported they received several positive comments regarding the city’s ballfields and parks system. Alexander also commented on the amount of skateboards and children skating at the skate park and encouraged another expansion of that, with Steven Maune assisting.

McCulloch also complimented the water department for line repairs on a main line break Friday evening.

Alexander also reported he was berated about the city allowing a dilapidated structure to remain on Shady Lane. Alexander asked that this be handled legally once again.

The council did have a closed session meeting with one matter of personnel being discussed with Gage Kight hired as a semi-skilled laborer for the water and sewer department at a pay rate of $14.80 per hour.
