An alert resident visiting the Flying J Travel Center in Sullivan assisted Sullivan Police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol July 8 in rescuing a woman who was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted while outside of the vehicle she was traveling in.

Ashley D. Shilala, 31, Tonopah, Ariz., has been charged with kidnapping and assault.

A witness to the advised Sullivan Police that the victim was sitting towards the back of Flying J on a bench when Shilala allegedly walked up to the victim and began punching her in the head.

The witness confronted Shilala, telling her to stop hitting the victim. Shilala stated it was her wife.

The witness is then alleged to have informed Shilala that they were going to call the police. Shilala drug the victim to a Ford Escape and “forcefully” took off the license plate on the vehicle.

Another witness confirmed the account.

The vehicle fled the area and was stopped by a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, west of Rolla at 1:56 p.m.

Sullivan Police then spoke with the victim via telephone, who reported that she did not feel safe with the suspect. Shilala allegedly struck her in the head several times at Flying J and she didn’t remember how she ended up back in the suspect car.

The victim informed police that she had been trying to get help through multiple states, but that Shilala would not let her go to the bathroom by herself or out of the vehicle by herself at any time.

The victim reported that a third person was traveling in the vehicle, and any time Shilala, that person would keep possession of the keys.

Police reported that when they interviewed Shilala, she claimed it was sexual role play between them.
