Woman Accused Of Attempting To Burn Down Her Apartment

A woman has been charged with arson after she allegedly tried to burn down her apartment complex.

Elizabeth Williams, 69, faces one count of second-degree arson.

According to the probable cause statement, Williams set fire to the front door of her apartment and possibly tried to start a fire on the floor.

Police responded to the complex May 25 to find Williams, formerly of Sullivan, sitting on a couch inside her apartment.

Burn marks were observed inside of the front door, at the top and bottom. A storage closet also had burn marks.

A partially burned roll of toilet paper was on her bedroom floor.

Williams said two men were inside her residence holding her hostage. She said they were trying to kill her, so she set the fire in an attempt to escape.

Police had been to Williams’ residence before to investigate claims that men were inside her apartment, but nobody was ever located.

Police said Williams had the mannerisms of being under the influence of methamphetamine. She was unable to sit still, mumbled and was seeing people who weren’t there.

The landlord said he wished to pursue charges against Williams.

Williams was taken to the hospital for a psychological evaluation. The officer said he believed she was under the influence of meth, to which she allegedly responded that she had done meth the day prior.

Williams was placed on a 96-hour hold.

She is currently in custody at the Crawford County Jail.
