Steelville Man Killed In Wrong Way Crash, Driver Arrested For DWI

A Steelville man was killed June 7 when a wrong-way driver who was allegedly intoxicated struck his vehicle head-on. 

The crash also led to serious injuries for a passenger.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 6:08 p.m. on Highway 8 at Indian Springs Road in Crawford County.

A 2007 Dodge 1500, driven by Cody A. Carey, 30, Steelville, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lane.

Carey’s vehicle collided head-on with a 2019 Ford F-150, driven by Morgan.

Morgan was taken to Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 7:14 p.m.

Leah M. Morgan, 40, had serious injuries. She was transported to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis by helicopter.

Carey had minor injuries. He was arrested at 6:40 p.m. and booked into the Crawford County Jail on a 24-hour hold.

Carey was arrested for driving while intoxicated — death of another, serious injury, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway, careless and imprudent driving, driving without insurance and failure to properly affix plate.

All three occupants were wearing seat belts.
